York, England Vegan Guide

Nestled along the picturesque banks of the River Ouse, York, England is a city that beckons travelers with an alluring blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. With roots dating back to Roman times when it bore the name Eboracum, this city wears its rich history proudly, evident in its cobbled streets, medieval walls, and grandiose architecture.

Beyond its storied past, York is a vibrant modern hub that offers a plethora of activities for all interests. From exploring the awe-inspiring York Minster to strolling the ancient Shambles, or immersing oneself in the interactive charm of the Jorvik Viking Centre, this city promises an adventure around every corner. The city was also extremely vegan friendly. With vegan restaurants and restaurants with actually good vegan options!

With so many things to explore, here’s my vegan guide of where to eat and what to do.

This 100% plant-based coffee shop is a pro-planet cafe that is more than just coffee. They are not only practicing but also, showing how you can be sustainable in today’s society. They source carbon-neutral coffee by Maude Coffee Roasters in Leeds and showcase a spread of locally made pastries and an all day brunch made with seasonal ingredients. Everything here is made with such care that I recommend this to be at the top of your list in York.

What To Do

Do A Ghost Bus Tour

This theatrical experience is a must in York! York has a haunting history and a fun way to learn about it is by doing a comedy ghost tour because firstly, it makes it less scary since it’s comedy but also, it provides that spooky experience in the beautiful city of York. The tour is an hour and a half long and it takes you around the city while showing you some of the haunting areas that exist today. Beware, the bus is a little haunted too.

Walk & Shop Through The Shambles

The Shambles has many unique stores to explore!

The famous Shambles street is a treat for everyone. This is the street that is believed to have inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter with its quirky and medieval buildings that date back to the 14th century, narrow and cobble stone streets, and shops. This is a great place for shopping but also, just to browse.

Walk Around The City Walls

These Roman city walls are well intact that you can walk on along these walls. It is a circular route around the city that is free for everyone year-round. The entire route is 2.6 miles long and takes roughly 2 hours to complete but you can get off at different points if you don’t wish to do the entire route.

Jorvik Viking Centre

Ride in a carriage through a recreated Viking village from between 883-1066 A.D. Besides the ride, there is also a great museum area. It combines an exhibition of at least 800 finds from the site along with interactive displays and a chance to learn about tenth-century life.
