A Sustainable Feast at Soter Vineyards

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Soter Vineyards in Carlton, Oregon, as a 36th anniversary gift for my parents. While I don't drink alcohol myself, I was excited to explore their 250-acre biodynamic farm and experience their renowned farm-to-table cuisine.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment we arrived at Soter Vineyards, perched atop a hill with breathtaking views of the Willamette Valley, we were enveloped in warmth and hospitality. Our host, Tess, greeted us by name and immediately wished my parents a happy anniversary, setting the tone for a personalized experience. As we entered the tasting room, I was struck by its cozy atmosphere. The open kitchen where chefs prepared our meal added a homey touch, and the abundance of seating areas invited guests to linger and soak in the stunning vineyard vistas.

A Commitment to Sustainability

What truly sets Soter apart is their unwavering commitment to biodynamic farming practices. As we toured the property, I was impressed by their holistic approach to agriculture. The 250-acre farm isn't just about grapes; it's a diverse ecosystem where vegetables, fruits, and more to coexist in harmony. Their transparency about ingredients is refreshing. They proudly showcase produce from their own farm and openly share information about local partners they work with for additional ingredients. This commitment to local, sustainable sourcing resonates deeply.

A Veggie-Forward Feast

The seasonal menu at Soter is a vegetable lover's dream. While not exclusively vegan, their veggie-forward approach means they can easily accommodate various dietary restrictions, including vegan and gluten-free diets. Our three-course meal was a celebration of summer's bounty:

Appetizers

  • A vibrant summer salad with crisp cucumber and a tangy apple vinaigrette

  • A velvety vichyssoise highlighting spring onion and green garlic

  • A colorful tomato salad with umeboshi vinaigrette and juicy stonefruit

Main Course

Our main plate was a symphony of seasonal vegetables:

  • Tender summer squash adorned with delicate squash blossoms and aromatic fennel pollen

  • Meaty lobster mushrooms nestled on a bed of creamy polenta with leeks and tomatoes

  • Crisp summer beans adding a fresh crunch

Dessert

We concluded with a palate-cleansing verjus sorbet, a perfect light end to our meal.

Attention to Detail

The attention to detail at Soter was truly remarkable. Personalized menus featuring our names and a special anniversary message for my parents added a thoughtful touch. Dining at a long table overlooking the vineyards, we felt like honored guests at an intimate gathering rather than customers at a restaurant.

Overall Impression

As we reluctantly said our goodbyes, I couldn't help but reflect on how Soter Vineyards had exceeded my expectations. While I may not have indulged in their wines, the experience of dining amidst a thriving biodynamic farm, savoring expertly prepared seasonal vegetables, and basking in genuine hospitality left an indelible impression.

For those seeking a farm-to-table experience that honors the earth and celebrates the bounty of each season, Soter Vineyards is a must-visit destination.
