Eureka, located in Northern California, is a port city that has a lot of history. This is reflected in the buildings and architecture you see in Old Town. Victorian buildings and homes, including the iconic Carson mansion and it is near the world famous Redwoods National Park. With there being quite a bit to see in and near Eureka, but where to start?

See the Carson Mansion and Pinc Lady

Carson Mansion in Eureka, California

The Carson Mansion, which was constructed in 1884-1885, is a prime example of Queen Anne architecture and has become an icon symbol of Eureka. This 4-story home that was built by William Carson, who gained his fortune from Redwood, is now a private club. Therefore, you can enjoy its exterior and take photos, but you are not allowed inside.

Across the street from the Carson Mansion is the Pinc Lady. Another Victorian mansion that was the home of William Carson’s son and wife, is now a place for public tours, educational programs, dining, shopping, guest house accommodations, weddings & events, and so much more.

Walk along the Eureka Waterfront Trail

Located in Humboldt Bay, this 6.5 mile trail is perfect for pedestrians, bikers, and runners. Enjoy views of the bay and mountains. If over 6 miles is too long, there is a shorter 1.5 mile section that continues to run through the river.

Have a walk around Old Town

Old Town Eureka is filled with beautiful Victorian style buildings that are filled with bookstores, gift shops, restaurants, cafes and more. The streets are narrow and easy to walk through.

Where to eat in Eureka as a vegan

I’ll be honest, Eureka doesn’t have too many restaurants with vegan options, but that shouldn’t deter you from coming to Eureka and checking out the Redwoods. But here are a few that I highly recommend!

This Mexican/Jewish bagel shop is located right in Old Town and is a must for any bagel lover. You walk into their vibrant shop with beautiful Mexican decor and art that is inviting. They have your classic bagel options and a variety of house made spreads with vegan options.

How far are the Redwoods from Eureka?

The Redwoods National Park is just over an hour away from Eureka (approx. 1 hour & 15 minutes). Making it an easy day to trip to see the beautiful Sequoia trees and explore some beautiful trails.

Redwood Trails to explore

Stagecoach Hill Azalea Nature Trail

An easy trail right off of Highway 101 that is a 0.5 miles loop. Along the trail, you’ll see beautiful azaleas and even get views of the ocean in the distance. The most ideal time to do this trail is in the springtime. Particularly May and June. That’s when you’ll see the azaleas be a solid pink, white, and red.

Prarie Creek Redwoods State Park

Big Tree Wayside - “The Big Tree”

Also known as “The Big Tree”. It is located inside the Prarie Creek Redwoods State Park, walk less than 200 yards through an easy, paved trail to see this stunning tree that is over 1,500 years old tree and stands at over 300 ft. tall.

Corkscrew Tree

It’s called “corkscrew” because they are multiple tree trunks twisted around like a corkscrew. You can find this tree along the Prarie Creek Redwoods State Park and just north of the The Big Tree. One of the most unique trees you’ll see along this trail.

Trees of Mystery

The Canopy Trail, which takes you up in the trees

Located along route 101, Trees of Mystery is a nature park for all ages where you get to walk through trails and see some stunning Sequoia trees. Not only do you get to walk through the trails, but you also get to go up in the trees in two ways. The first, there’s the canopy trail where it’s a bridge from one tree to another while getting views of the park.

SkyTrail gondola ride

The SkyTrail at Trees of Mystery

The second, there is the SkyTrail. What they call the SkyTrail gondola ride takes you 1,570 ft up into the trees that lasts for about 8-10 minutes one way. Once at the top, you have a scenic view of the forest and of the ocean. The SkyTrail is included in your ticket.
